At Jeevaratchanai, we believe that every child deserves to grow up in a family filled with love, care, and support. Our Foster Care Initiative is all about creating a safe and nurturing space for children who, for reasons beyond their control, can’t be with their birth families. Through foster care, we’re working to give children the stability, love, and opportunities they need to thrive.

What is Foster Care?

Foster care is a simple yet powerful idea: it’s about providing a temporary home for children who need one. When children can’t live with their birth families—whether due to crisis, poverty, or other challenges—they’re placed with trained foster parents who offer them a safe, loving, and stable environment. It’s not just about giving them a roof over their heads; it’s about giving them a sense of belonging, emotional support, and the chance to heal and grow.

Foster care is a bridge—a way to help children feel loved and secure until they can either reunite with their families, find a permanent home through adoption, or transition to independent living.

Foster Care Around The World

Foster care has been a lifeline for millions of children across the globe. In countries like the United States, the UK, and Australia, foster care systems have been in place for decades, helping children find safe and loving homes. These systems have shown us that when children are placed in caring families, they’re more likely to succeed in school, build healthy relationships, and grow into confident adults.

Foster Care in India and Tamil Nadu

In India, foster care is still a relatively new concept. While we’ve made progress in child welfare through adoption and childcare institutions, foster care remains largely unknown. Many children who need temporary care end up in child care institutions, which, while helpful, can’t replace the warmth, loving and individual attention of a family.

In India, particularly in Tamil Nadu thousands of children are waiting for a safe and loving home—children who’ve faced unimaginable challenges like family crises, poverty, or loss. But the truth is, many people don’t even know that foster care is an option. There’s a lack of awareness, and that’s something we’re determined to change.
